Despite claiming that he was not being charged after assaulting Colby Covington in public, UFC welterweight Jorge “Gamebred” Masvidal is under arrest and facing serious charges.
Masvidal was arrested on charges of aggravated battery/great bodily harm and criminal mischief. This comes following Colby Covington’s choice to deliver a formal statement to Miami Beach police regarding the incident, and Covington’s choice to press charges. Covington provided a sworn statement to police regarding the incident, identifying himself as the victim of the assault.
Masvidal Arrested, Charged, Pleads Not Guilty
Colby Covington was having dinner at the Papi Steak restaurant when Masvidal and several other men attacked him. In doing so, Colby sustained a fractured tooth, a wrist abrasion, and perhaps worst of all, approximately $15,000 worth of damage to his $90,000.00 Rolex watch.
Supposedly, Masvidal shouted “You shouldn’t have been talking about my kids” during the assault. Colby Covington talked a lot of trash about Jorge Masvidal over the years, but it only intensified in the lead up to their headline clash at UFC 272.
Anybody hoping for a dramatic finish to the heated rivalry was disappointed as Colby used his high-pressure wrestling to dominate Masvidal for the entire fight. Masvidal managed to squeeze out one heavy shot in the fourth round, but was unable to follow it up with anything significant, and Colby resumed manhandling him almost immediately.
Jorge Masvidal, if convicted, is facing serious consequences. He could spend up to fifteen years behind bars thanks to the aggravated battery charge, a second-degree felony in the state of Florida. Masvidal’s criminal mischief charge comes thanks to the damage he inflicted on Colby Covington’s prized Rolex.
Although Jorge Masvidal uploaded videos to social media shortly after the incident seemingly claiming responsibility for the attack – saying ““call this the show your face challenge … what’s up, I’m from Dade county. You talk that s*** you’ve got to back it up. That’s how my city rolls.” – he reportedly plead not guilty following the charges.
Masvidal told the Nevada State Athletic Commission earlier this week that he was not being charged, but wanted to postpone his license application – related to his promotion Gamebred Fighting – for another time.
“Right now, I had a mutual combatant with another athlete, and you know, I can’t say too much on this, but if we could table [the application] for later, that would be amazing.”
Will Jorge Masvidal end up behind bars? Let us know in the comments.
