If there’s one thing that’s certain in professional wrestling, it’s that you never say never.
As the lead producer for the Royal Rumble, Shane took a lot of heat for how it was booked as the event quickly made the list of worst pay-per-views ever.
He not only put himself into the match as a surprise entrant, but he reportedly wanted others like Seth Rollins to appear despite having another big match. The plan was rumored to be a storyline feud between Shane and Rollins for WrestleMania.
Other rumors say that Shane was going to feud with Austin Theory as part of the Theory and Mr. McMahon storyline.
But none of that came to pass as Shane was quietly fired by Vince McMahon, officially killing the notion that Vince won’t fire family.
Here comes the money
It’s no surprise that the WWE would bring Shane back at some point, as it’s a bigger surprise he actually agreed to come back.
Many expected him to purchase a small promotion like ROH or GCW, or even start his own but none of that materialized and maybe they never will. ROH was purchased by Tony Kahn, so that’s one less option.
Mike Johnson of PWInsider.com broke the news that Shane returned to the WWE for WrestleMania weekend.
The reasons, whether there’s still problems between Shane and Vince, and whether Shane will take part in the event are anyone’s guess.
Since Shane was supposed to play a significant heel role on Raw, this may be his return to that with the understanding of what Vince wants and expects.
Given the state of Raw, it can’t get any worse. It’s been circling the 2001 WCW Nitro circuit for a while now.
Possible roles
Shane could remain in a backstage role for the show and may even have a hand in booking a couple of segments or matches.
More likely, we expect him to come out from behind the curtain possibly as a manager for Cody when he faces Rollins or as a surprise addition to make the match a triple threat.
There’s also the possibility that he’ll be Rollins’ opponent, which would shatter quite a few thoughts on Cody’s return to the WWE and what that could mean.
Given the WWE’s love fest with constant triple threats and fatal four ways, it won’t surprise us if Shane’s added to one of those matches as a surprise opponent.
