    WWE Title Unification is Temporary

For those of us hoping the WWE would actually unify their top championships to add more storyline opportunities instead of maintaining the brand separation illusion, our time or rejoicing is short.

At least, that’s according to reports form Dave Meltzer and the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

It looks like the window of Roman Reigns having both titles is a short lived storyline/experiment, It’s nothing new for the WWE as they’ve unified the top titles three times since 2001.

Special thanks to f4online.com for the following excerpt.

“That is the plan after this match. The winner will be a champion. Although internally it’s conceded this one unified champion is temporary,

“It will change (from one champion again) because it’s not plausible, not for either’s schedule, not for the networks, not for the long term,” it was noted to us.”

    Making news

There were reports that unifying the WWE and Universal Championships wasn’t the plan initially, but as WrestleMania loomed closer it became a legitimate plan.

A title unification match would be news in the wrestling world and would help bring people in to watch WrestleMania 38 through various means, so in that way it was a success.

If the titles were legitimately unified, then Roman Reigns would have to appear on both shows and it would’ve most likely been split in a few years, so this looks like the middle road for the ideas.

The last time they split the title was when the Universal Championship was created in 2016 and Finn Balor was the inaugural champion after he defeated Seth Rollins.

The split became necessary when the WWE Championship was moved exclusively to Smackdown, and it added more merchandise opportunities.

Each brand having their own championship, fans could collect more belts and get into the fun more by proclaiming their favorite was the best and so on.

    A pause

Putting both titles on Reigns also gives Raw a chance to find its bearings, so to speak. They’re the weakest of the two shows by far and this will give them a chance to start building their stars and creating possible challengers.

It’ll also create some buzz as fans wonder which title will be coming back to Raw through Bobby Lashley, Cody Rhodes, Randy Orton, or Seth Rollins.

By the time Reigns is ready to drop one of them, there should be a decent sized line chomping to get a shot at the title. Assuming the WWE doesn’t waste the energy the feuds will bring before then.
