Another Monday brings us another episode of Monday Night Raw! And tonight, on the first Raw of the year, we have a rematch from a fairly newsworthy house show, the grand ‘ol Madison Square Garden! They always like to do something special whenever they go to MSG and when they returned to the storied venue last month, it was no exception. Andrade defeated Rey Mysterio to win the WWE United States Championship! And tonight, we have the rematch! I’m Jordan Huie for the Overtimer, this show is mere minutes away so let’s take a quick look at this bout!
WWE United States Championship: Andrade (c) vs. Rey Mysterio
Rey Mysterio is a legend in pretty much anyone’s mind, one of the biggest names WWE has to offer right now. Andrade is a popular pick for the next big Spanish superstar, a demo that WWE has been trying and failing to find a new big name to replace Rey with for about the last decade or so. So it’s quite meaningful that he had the rivalry with him that he did, amassing a ton of much lauded matches on SmackDown. But no victory was more significant than the one he got over him last month.
Taking a title off a name like Rey Mysterio is no small matter. And for Andrade, it’s the first title he’s won since he was moved from NXT to the main roster a couple of years back. This is quite the time to be US Champ too, with Brock Lesnar resuming his old role of absentee WWE Champion for the most part. Effectively, he’s going to be the top male singles champ on the show most weeks… assuming he can hold onto that title. And I think he will here. Andrade to beat Rey again, and this time we’ll all be watching when it happens!
