Right now in WWE, fan focus is on Sasha Banks & Naomi. They recently walked out during an episode of Monday Night RAW, and as such were stripped of the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships. There’s seemingly a million differing reports on what exactly went down, but the one thing that has been made clear is that WWE are going to set up a tournament to name new tag team champions. However, the division is so sparse – that we might see call ups from NXT to fill out the field.
NXT Call Ups Will Be Needed To Fill This Tournament
Today during Wrestling Observer Live, Bryan Alavarez would note that WWE has plans to bring in some teams from NXT to fill in spots for this tournament. He’d say the following.
“They have sent word down to NXT to think about some women that might be able to be a team. That’s where we’re at right now so yea you might see Kacy and Kayden called up because ‘we need teams.’”
If talent is brought up for this tournament, it’s unclear if they will just be showing up to be in the tournament, or permanently moving to RAW or Smackdown. NXT 2.0 has a similarly sparse women’s division, and can’t afford to lose its more experienced names.
Could WWE Just Unify Some More Titles?
Situations like this are why many fans question why the belts are even being kept around, let alone why WWE has two separate sets of women’s tag team championships, and so few teams to contend for them.
The women’s tag team division has been an afterthought since it was introduced, which is one of the reported reasons Banks & Naomi stepped out. They were given promises of good booking as tag team champions, which never surfaced.
One idea that could remedy this issue, is having the NXT Women’s Tag Team Champions Jacy Jayne & Gigi Dolin win the tournament, and unify the belts. Main roster talent has been floating between NXT & their main shows, so NXT talent could do the same as tag team champions.
