Every UFC fan is aware of Charles Oliveira‘s weight controversy at the UFC 274. The people’s champ misses weight by half a pound and the world goes nuts over it. Many controversies, stories, and rumors pop up, all of which blame someone else for Oliveira’s weight miss.
In a recent feature in Teddy Atlas’s podcast The Fight, the former title challenger Dustin Poirier expresses his feelings on the matter.
Dustin Poirier Demands Digital Scales – We Want To See Exact Numbers!
To sum up, he wants to see major improvements in this area by the UFC. He says that the promotion needs to put more attention on the matter. Particularly because they are still using these ‘primary’ tools that should have been changed long ago.
“We need to be on digital scales so there’s no gray area, right? You can’t have a guy there tapping a weight balance scale and is, kind of, balancing and he just says it’s a half-pound or whatever. We need exact numbers,” – Poirier states.
“You get on a digital scale, it shows up on the screen. That’s it, your actual weight. I don’t like the fact that these guys are tapping this balance scale.” – the former title challenger says.
Poirier expresses his surprise that Oliveira allows himself such omission, even though this is not his first incident in weighing. Oliveira has a history of missing weight on several occasions.
“I was kind of surprised when he came in a little over, but maybe they misjudged some things or the scale was different back in the locker room. I don’t know.” – Poirier blames the locker scales.
“In an hour’s time, I thought that, he’d come back and be on weight, especially in a championship fight. I thought he was gonna lose that half-pound.”
Charles Oliviera did have an hour to drop the weight below the limit, however, he did not succeed. What is the reason for not being able to lose this additional half a pound is not clear. Poirier sees another lack of motivation by Oliveira here. How is it possible not to lose half a pound in one hour? In Poirier’s eyes ‘Do Bronx’ could most certainly do more than what he did.
“It didn’t seem that way, ‘cause they weren’t carrying him out. He wasn’t stumbling around, he didn’t look like… he’s always really lean, and he’s long and tall, so he looks slim,” – Dustin says.
“He’s a big guy, but he didn’t look like he needed to be helped. He still had life in his body. He could’ve — it looked like — tried to lose more weight.”
Nevertheless, Charles wins the bout. However, he is no champion. His title is stripped and he is only the top contender for the title now. Who does Dana White have in plan to put against him? Will it be Conor McGregor?
