Today, January 21, 2010, marks the 30th anniversary of Hulk Hogan winning the first of two consecutive Royal Rumbles. It was three years before the WWE changed the format to where the winner would face the heavyweight champion (later changed to choosing which one with the brand separations) at WrestleMania. It also marks an opportunity for Brock Lesnar to repeat Hulk Hogan’s historic Royal Rumble moment.
Hogan/Warrior staredown
That Royal Rumble was historic for several reasons. The most prevalent is the Hogan Warrior staredown. It raised goosebumps and electricity was in the air. “There is not a person sitting down!” – Tony Schiavone in his final final WWF PPV. Thank you @awrestlinghistorian for this tidbit.

It was the unmovable object vs. the irresistible force and led to one of the greatest matches in WrestleMania history at WrestleMania 6.
It also marked the only time a current reigning World Heavyweight Champion (Hulk Hogan) won the Rumble.
This leads us to a possible historic moment coming up in this year’s Rumble…
Could Brock Lesnar to repeat Hulk Hogan’s historic Royal Rumble moment?
It’s been 30 years, and with Lesnar looking to take everyone out of the Rumble as they’re not “worthy” to face him, this could be likely.
I previously wrote my theory on Drew McIntrye winning to face Lesnar at WrestleMania 36, and while I still believe that, there is another idea I want to float.
With the Hogan and Ultimate Warrior anniversary staredown here, the odds are the WWE creative may want to recreate that moment for this year’s WrestleMania. With Ricochet and Randy Orton stepping into the light to oppose Lesnar and McIntyre respectively, I’m willing to bet it’ll come down to these four at some point. I wager that Lesnar and McIntyre will eliminate their respective problems before having their own faceoff.
To be honest, what would be better than them standing nose to nose before going after each other? It’d be an epic moment that would set things up perfectly between the two of them and really build anticipation for WrestleMania in what should be the main event.
With the other storylines like Samoa Joe and Kevin Owens facing off against Seth Rollins and Buddy Murphey, as well as potentially each other, this year’s Royal Rumble is shaping up to be one of the best pay-per-views of the year.
It’s easy to wonder how the WWE could screw this up, but then Vince McMahon is the king of “hold my beer” at this challenge the last few years.
With any luck, he won’t disappoint us.
