There are only so many times we’re introduced to a comic genius that is so lovable, we can’t help but watch and laugh and cheer for them. It’s a rare gift to pull people out of their seats for a better view or get them cheering at a simple gesture, but that’s something Otis, one half of the WWE tag team Heavy Machinery, does every time. He’s the lovable lug we want to cheer for. We feel for him when he’s hurt, and that makes us support him all the more. In so many ways, Otis is the WWE’s Chris Farley.
Have I lost my mind?
Okay, to be fair that’s something some of you may be thinking. Others may be asking who Chris Farley is.
This comparison isn’t as out there as it may seem. Chris Farley was a plus-sized comedian who grew up watching John Belushi and John Candy. From his days on Saturday Night Live to numerous movies with David Spade, he was the lovable big guy that played up spontaneous actions with quality athletic ability. He was a once in a generational talent in the comedy world that was lost way too soon.
He also had a heart of gold on camera and off.
In the brief time Otis has been in the WWE spotlight, he’s shown the same qualities on camera and off on social media. He has a natural goofiness about him that’s timeless, like an inner child that comes out to play sometimes, and he’s done a great job channeling it into his WWE character.
It can be argued that Otis’ on screen personality is based somewhat on Chris Farley’s SNL Chippendales The above video from Saturday Night Live is one of Chris Farley’s golden moments. It was a career maker.
Kinda similar to Otis breaking out the moves, isn’t it?
We want him to get the girl
Seriously, how could anyone not want to see Otis and Mandy Rose become a thing after their brief, awkward but cute, build up?
It’s so adorable, it’s must see TV every Friday night.
If he doesn’t, well, let’s not go down that road, okay? He and Mandy have to hook up. It’s just too perfect not to.
Oh, guess who else got the girl in his movies? Yep. There’s something about lovable lugs that’s hard for anyone to ignore much less hate.
What’ll really be interesting is how their growing relationship will affect those around them. Tucker’s got Otis’ back no matter what, and Sonya Deville has Mandy’s. The question for how long? I previously wrote about how Otis was a way to break up Fire and Desire (Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville), so is it possible their relationship may eventually spell doom for Heavy Machinery?
It might. But until then, let’s enjoy the fun. We only get characters like this so often. Does it really matter if Otis is the WWE’s Chris Farley?
