Sean O’Malley: Nobody Calls Him Out Because ” it’s a tough fight”

Rising UFC bantamweight Sean O’Malley isn’t quite sure why nobody above him in the rankings is calling him out, but he has some idea. O’Malley told ESPN that it’s likely because he’s a “tough fight” despite the naysayers.

“No one really above me ever calls me out. Now Adrian Yanez is calling me out, which he should be. That’s what you should be [doing] — you call out the most popular guy in the division, one of the most popular guys in the UFC. Call him out.

Sean O’Malley: Nobody Calls Him Out Because ” it’s a tough fight”

No one above me calls me out. I don’t know why. I don’t know if [they think] it’s a waste of time, they don’t want to make any easy paycheck. They can say whatever they want but I look at it as they know it’s a tough fight.”

Sean O’Malley is currently riding a three-fight winning streak, and is planning to extend it to a fourth this weekend. He takes on Pedro Munhoz, ranked ninth in the bantamweight division, in his toughest test yet. Sean O’Malley’s striking is “sweet” enough to earn him the nickname “Suga”, and his penchant for early knockouts and striking appearance have made him a rising star in the UFC. However, Munhoz’s granite chin has never been cracked, with the bantamweight boasting zero knockout losses in 27 professional fights. Sean O’Malley plans on changing that.

“I think it opens a lot of people’s eyes but I still think people are stupid and people will be like, ‘Yeah, but…’.

I think I go out there and put his lights out, I’ll surprise a lot of people but there’ll still be the haters that are like, ‘Yeah, but he’s this old, he lost to this guy…’ There’s still those people but I think for me it’s an advantage because people underestimate me. Every opponent underestimates me because of the hair, the outfits, for whatever reason it is.

Then I get in there with them and it’s like, oh, he is as good as he says he is. It’s not just talk. Even with the performances I put on people still underestimate me. Maybe I am as good as I say I am, we just gotta find out against Pedro, July 2.”

Sean O’Malley’s rise through the bantamweight ranks is slow but steady. He has long claimed that he intends to fight for the title, and taking out a top-ten ranked bantamweight would be a major step towards that goal.  Do you think Sean O’Malley is right about his position in the bantamweight rankings? Let us know in the comments.
