AAA TripleMania XXVII is in the books, and it was a night with a fair few news stories. 2-Time UFC Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez made his wrestling debut, surprisingly wearing a mask, and impressed many with his athleticism. Blue Demon Jr. defeated Dr. Wagner Jr. in a battle of legit legends, forcing the latter to shave his head. But as far as the company’s future plans go, maybe the most significant regards to Kenny Omega. The former IWGP Heavyweight Champion and current AEW figurehead laid out a challenge to AAA Mega Champion Rey Fenix. Fenix of course quickly accepted, so we can go ahead and call that match official.
Kenny Omega was on the losing side of a trios match in which he and the Young Bucks faced off with Laredo Kid & The Lucha Bros, a direct rematch from Fyter Fest. But obviously he was undeterred, and to be fair he’s not the one who took the fall in this match. He was in fact the man who got the pin the first time around as well. Fenix, it should be noted, has held the AAA Mega Championship, the promotion’s top title, for a year now. He won it at last year’s TripleMania event.
However, that fact is a bit misleading… he has still yet to actually defend it at an official AAA event. In fact his only defense period came a month after his initial victory. He headlined a show for a smaller lucha libre company named GALLI and took their top title in a champion vs. champion match.
It looks as though that will finally change now.
Kenny Omega promised to return to Mexico to go after his title, suggesting that this match will indeed take place in AAA rather than in AEW. What his odds are of actually winning the championship is hard to say, but it should be noted that the Young Bucks had a brief run with the AAA Tag Titles earlier this year. And AAA in the past has happily put this very championship on the likes of Jeff Jarrett, largely so he could wear it on television in America. So the precedent is certainly there for Kenny to take the title and proudly brandish it when he comes to TNT. It’s not as though any title’s prestige could be hurt from someone like Omega holding it anyhow.
Kenny has faced off with Fenix in three trios matches now, but he’s only gone one-on-one with him a single time. And this wasn’t anywhere major, simply a main event of a small indy show ran by NEW. So suffice to say this match will be the most high profile bout the two have had together. I’m willing to bet it will be a fantastic one too.
No event or date has yet been announced for this match, but I’d suspect it’ll happen soon enough. Most AAA events now stream on Twitch with a subscription. For those in the Latin American regions, it can also be seen on TV Azteca.
