With all the turmoil surrounding the post Royal Rumble, the WWE was due for some good press, though that would depend on one’s perspective. Today it was announced that in August, Edge had talked with AEW (All Elite Wrestling) before signing with the WWE.
While Edge even admitted he didn’t know how long he’d be able to continue wrestling, there’s no denying the effect a short stint can do for a promotion. The roof blew off the arena when he came out for the Royal Rumble, and then the following night on Raw. It’s the type of star power the WWE has lacked recently as they’ve been shoving more of the same at us, then getting upset when we complain.
But things could’ve been far different.
Edge in AEW
This would’ve been different for several reasons, the top one being there’s no guarantee Edge could’ve been called Edge. The WWE most likely owns the rights to the name, so he would’ve had to come up with a new name or used his real one, Adam Copeland. Either one would’ve been fine with fans, but the luster would’ve quickly worn off at not calling him Edge anymore. Think of it along the lines of calling “Stone Cold” Steve Austin just Steve Austin, or Hulk Hogan Terry Bollea. It just doesn’t have the same pop.
Most likely, this was on Edge’s mind during his discussion with them. Reports say AEW offered him a deal as an agent or producer as well as an in-ring talent, but he obviously turned them down.
There’s no denying he would’ve been a great boon to AEW as the young promotion continues to grow and become a force in the professional wrestling world, but life goes on. There will be more talent for them in the future. It’s just going to be fun watching Edge in the ring again.
Why the WWE?
Only Edge knows why he chose the WWE, but he gave us a glimpse on Raw.
He wanted to come home. No matter what else he’s accomplished in his career in or out of the ring, the WWE will always be the place where he made his name, where he found his way in the world. It’s tough to choose against going home, and that may be why so many former WWE superstars choose to return at some point. It’s familiar, it’s safe, and it’s comfortable.
Some of the early questions about which brand he’d be on and who he’ll face at WrestleMania 36 were answered last night. With AJ Styles injured but expected to be ready for WrestleMania, the WWE teased Edge and Randy Orton getting back together before Orton hit him with an RKO.
That alone spoke about Styles’ availability, and it also popped Orton back into the heel role he wears so well. Barring injury, Orton and Edge will have no problem keeping this feud going red hot to and through WrestleMania if need be.
So, will the legend or legend killer stand tall?
This is going to be a fun ride.
