It seemed like in 2019, Erick Rowan was set to be a star. After being aligned with the newly heel Daniel Bryan, he become a prominent part of Smackdown Live, being a roadblock for opponents who wanted a shot at the then WWE Champion. Their union would last up until Rowan got sick being mistreated by Daniel Bryan, and after Rowan attempted to murder Roman Reigns backstage. During his feud with Roman, he would reunite with an old ally in Luke Harper, but he would vanish after their Tornado Tag Team Match with Daniel Bryan & Roman Reigns. Following this, things would get weird with Erick Rowan.
What Is In The Cage Of Erick Rowan?
For months now following the WWE Draft, Erick Rowan has been carrying around a large cage. It has drawn comparisons to the bag that Jake Roberts would carry Damien around in, but we don’t have any idea what could be inside the cage yet. Rowan has been mainly doing squash matches against local enhancement talent, some of which have tried to take a peek only to be mauled by Rowan.
Considering this has been going on for months, it feels like WWE doesn’t know what should be in the cage, if it will ever be revealed. It could just be a device to add intrigue to Erick Rowan, and the cage has been empty this whole time. Fans have been speculating for a while what it could be, from a snake to a shrunken Luke Harper to Rowans old sheep mask from his days in the Wyatt Family. Whatever it is, the level of intrigue surrounding it will almost make any reveal underwhelming.
Months Of Build Thrown Away In Seconds
As previously mentioned, WWE has spent months trying to position Rowan as a new dominant force through squash matches. This was almost entirely made meaningless when Brock Lesnar would eliminate Rowan from the Royal Rumble in less than 10 seconds. While the story of the first half of this years Royal Rumble was to position Brock Lesnar as unbeatable, having Rowan, your new dominant monster, get zero offense in simply felt odd. The next night on RAW, he was fed another jobber and the cycle begins anew.
Rowan is a great example of WWE currently having no stories in their undercard. They could be doing something interesting with him and the cage he is carrying around, but instead he will likely just keep beating local talent until he fades into obscurity or is banished by an up and coming babyface.
