Over his career, Claudio Castagnoli has claimed many championships – but has never been able to call himself a world champion. Tonight, he intends to change this – as he will go after the ROH World Championship. Jonathan Gresham is the reigning champion, and the foundation of the company.
Having recently aligned with Tully Blanchard, he has a veteran brain of the industry to back up his top notch technical wrestling skills – but as Castagnoli showed back at Forbidden Door – you’d be wise to not underestimate the skills and power of the Swiss Superman himself. A last minute change would put Gresham either alongside Prince Nana instead.
Jonathan Gresham Starts Off Fast
Gresham would have to think fast as Claudio ran in with an uppercut. Claudio would win a test of strength – but Gresham would pop the arm. Gresham would get caught in the Giant Swing, but was able to fight free before he lost this match early.
Claudio would be sent off with the armdrag, before a teased dropkick was followed by a simple kick of the leg. Dragon Screw leg whips would be followed by sending Claudio to the corner for a big stalling dropkick to the knee. It doesn’t matter how big you are if you’re cut to the ground.
Claudio would be able to toss Gresham into the corner, before landing the uppercut. Sharpshooter would almost be applied, before he’d just go for a double stomp instead. Gresham would go for the German Suplex, but Claudio would fight into the corner. Claudio took the dropkick, and when he hit a knee – Gresham rushed in with the big forearm strike.
Claudio Castagnoli Becomes ROH World Champion
Claudio would absorb a chop, before delivering a heavy uppercut. Gresham was dropped but would keep getting up. The knee would give out on the UFO attempt, before Gresham went back to the ankle lock. Gresham would be able to turn it into a German Suplex, before hitting the rushing forearm smashes.
He’d be launched into Swiss Death, but blocked the Ricola Bomb with the Sunset Flip for a two count. Dicsus Lariat would land, and Gresham would be unable to block the second Ricola Bomb attempt – and for the first time in his career- Claudio Castagnoli is a world champion!
