The new about Vince McMahon and the WWE continues to come out as we dive more and more into the various press releases and reports, and one of the latest is Vince didn’t retire from the WWE, he resigned.
Ever since the news broke that Vince paid money to an intern and had her sign a NDA (Non-Disclosure), it was widely believed that there was far more to come and the weeks since have proven that.
It was reported earlier that WWE’s SEC filing stated that since 2006, Vince paid out $14.6 million in “unreported expenses.
But it also stated that he resigned, not retired from the company. As shared by wrestlingnews.co:
“On July 22, 2022, Vincent K. McMahon informed the Company and its Board of Directors (the “Board”) of his resignation from his positions as Chief Executive Officer, Chairman and director of the Company, effective immediately.”
There is a difference as resigning, in cases like this, are often considered to be forced while retiring is less jarring. But in the end, they’re basically the same thing and it’s up to public perception.
Protecting the company
While Vince and the WWE are known to rebrand history to his preference or to protect the company from any fallout that could result from possible backlash.
This feels like Vince announcing on social media that he was retiring is his way of protecting the company publicly as it’s also believed he made the announcement on a Friday so the news and stock selling wouldn’t be as active.
Of course, he could’ve protected the company by not indulging or paying out alleged hush money.
There’s little doubt more will be coming out as the investigation continues, but it looks like the biggest news has happened with the WWE now under Stephanie McMahon and Nick Kahn’s control.
Turn the page
While the terminology is different, few WWE fans will notice or care for the difference as both mean Vince is stepping down and a new era is beginning.
As much as he’s loved and hated, it’s impossible not to give kudos to Vince for his vision making professional wrestling bigger than it would’ve been otherwise.
The WWE and pro wrestling in general was a large part of many of our lives over the years thanks to Vince and others’ efforts, but in the end they’re tended to be remembered for their mistakes and bad judgements more than not anymore.
