In the fall of 2021, we saw some sweeping changes to the NXT brand. The Black & Gold era of the brand came to an end, with a more colorful approach coming with NXT 2.0. New talent would flood the roster, with things finally becoming more stable in the spring of 2022. There was a lot of rumours that this was the move of Vince McMahon looking to make changes to the brand – but Shawn Michaels says otherwise.
Vince McMahon Was Not The One Behind The NXT 2.0 Switch
While speaking to Graham Matthews of Bleacher Report, Shawn Michaels would shut down any rumors that Vince McMahon & Bruce Prichard had a say in direction with the rebranding to NXT 2.0.
“When Hunter first left, it became all me, and certainly from a television standpoint. Matt Bloom is the head coach and takes care of everything from the PC training standpoint, but when it came to NXT 2.0 television, that’s something myself and my team took over creatively. I know a lot of people thought Vince and Bruce were doing that. I can promise you, they did not have the time to do NXT television. If it’s good or if it’s bad, that’s on me.
It’s been a huge joy to run that show and work with these talents. Again, everyone was put in a real tough position, we all were, but that’s where you learn to do things in WWE. That, to me, is a form of talent development, which is understanding that things can always change … around here and you have to adjust to that. The show always goes on. It was trial by fire for a lot of us, but it’s been an absolutely fantastic experience.”
Shawn Michaels & Triple H Are Perhaps The Creative Dream Team WWE Needs
Michaels has previously stated that he’s felt more fulfilment in training the next generation of talents than he did in his career within the ring. Triple H was expected to take over in NXT again once he returned, but wound up finding his way into the position of Head of Creative for the WWE Main Roster after Vince McMahon retired from the company.
Together, they hope to really soften out the transition issues from NXT to the main roster, where a lot of talents lose everything that made them liked by fans in NXT. These are old friends with a similar view on what professional wrestling should be, and that is something that was not shared between Vince McMahon & Triple H.
