Former two-division UFC champion Conor McGregor believes that he could be the one to dethrone Islam Makhachev. Makhachev claimed the UFC lightweight belt this weekend at UFC 280 this past weekend, and McGregor made his declaration via Twitter.
McGregor famously faced off against Islam Makhachev’s coach and mentor, Khabib Nurmagomedov, in 2018. He lost the fight via submission.
McGregor Claims He Has “All The Tools” To Defeat Islam Makhachev
McGregor, watching the fights from home, declared his supremacy with a “system” that he has been developing since the Khabib fight.
“Nice fight. nice performance. I have built all the tools to beat this style now versus before. Experience vs. s***. Face breaking shots from clinch and baby brain batter shots from bottom. And the rest of my repertoire yous know. Steel left leg. Cannon back hand. Wrist control.
The thought of shutting down this system of fighting with my own developed system is quite intriguing to me. Whoever of them against. It’s not personal. It’s a skill evaluation and a fight. Even through generations. The [IMMAF’s], amateurs. A war of attrition. To the box.”
McGregor continued, claiming that he has developed a strategy to defeat Dagestani wrestlers. McGregor has been away from competition since July last year, recovering from a broken leg he sustained fighting Dustin Poirier.
“I have the system to hurt this style of fighting guys I am telling you. Bro is a s*** jocks. Fat mouth, shut your mouth you done nothing tonight except go against father’s wishes and run. It’s not father’s plan completed yet, pal. You know. Your people know and they talk about you.”
Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor’s rivalry spilled out of the Octagon several times, including an incident in which McGregor attacked a bus containing Khabib and several other UFC fighters. Khabib has since retired from competition and shows no signs of returning. In Islam Makhachev, however, McGregor may be able to rekindle his rivalry, and dethrone Khabib’s heir apparent.
Despite this, Conor McGregor may not ever fight at lightweight again. McGregor has recently claimed that he will return to the Octagon to fight in the 170-pound welterweight division, boasting a seriously bulked-up physique earned during his layoff from the Octagon. McGregor has not yet confirmed either a date or a weight for his UFC return, but will be appearing in the Jake Gyllenhaal-led remake of Roadhouse.
