Sir Elton John is one of the many celebrities that left Twitter since Elon Musk took over the company. The world-class singer is no longer on Twitter because he sees the most recent ‘change in policy’ as contra-productive. According to him Twitter now is a tool for spreading misinformation.
The social media platform made some drastic changes to its policy since Elon Musk took over. One of the first moves was to stop taking action on accounts that spread misinformation about the COVID-19 pandemic.
Sir Elton John Left Twitter Due To The Spread Of Misinformation
Elon Musk seems to not bother much by the celebrities leaving the platform. His reaction to Elton John leaving Twitter was, so to say, shallow and uncaring. He just said that he hopes he will be back – without raising concern about what Twitter is becoming.
“All my life I’ve tried to use music to bring people together. Yet it saddens me to see how misinformation is now being used to divide our world. I’ve decided to no longer use Twitter, given their recent change in policy. This will allow misinformation to flourish unchecked.” – Elton John tweeted right before deactivating his profile.
“I love your music. Hope you come back. Is there any misinformation in particular that you’re concerned about?” – Elon Musk asked the singer.
The public was concerned about Elon Musk’s Twitter takeover since day one. He started unbanning accounts and changing policies almost immediately after stepping into office. Even though according to him, this is all in favor of free speech, the public is concerned that instead of that, his moves fuel the spread of misinformation and hate speech.
Numerous celebrities left the platform since Elon Musk took over. In fact, his administration on Twitter is the sole reason for their leaving. Jim Carey, Gigi Hadid, Jack White, Whoopi Goldberg, and now, Elton John, and the list goes on. These are just a few of the sounding names that left the social media platform.
It is undoubtedly that all of the celebrities that left Twitter share Gigi Hadid’s opinion on Twitter under Elon Musk. Right before she deactivated her profile she wrote that Twitter is becoming a ‘cesspool of hate and bigotry’.
Twitter suspended more than 10 000 accounts in just 4 months. These accounts received the ban only due to spreading misinformation about the Covid 19 pandemic. Now, under Musk’s ruling, this is no more. As of the 23rd of November, Twitter changed this policy. Twitter doesn’t take any action against the coronavirus misinformation spread.
To be frank, the policy says Twitter will take action against this. However, it will happen after the account receives ‘five strikes’, or five warnings. When an account receives five strikes for spreading misinformation about Covid, it may be suspended. The suspension may be for a day, week, month, or indefinitely, depending on the scale of the misinformation shared.
