For years, there was a huge missed chance on the WWE roster, known as The Ascension. They have been brought back to attention thanks to the recent Talk Is Jericho episode with Brodie Lee. During his tell all interview with Le Champion, Lee mentioned that at one point Vince McMahon wanted him and Erick Rowan to be a modern version of Demolition.
Demolition were one of the most successful tag teams in WWE, with their record setting tag team title reign standing until The New Day beat it in 2017.
While Vince wanted Harper & Rowan as the new Demoiliton, he had already tried that; a move which killed the careers of Konnor & Viktor in the process. This story being shared has people thinking of them once again, and how much of a missed chance this team was for WWE now that they are gone.
Dead On Arrival After NXT Dominance
The Ascension still hold history within WWE, as they are still the longest reigning NXT Tag Team Champions in history at 364 days. Despite this, when they left the Black & Gold brand, they were altered to be a modern take on teams like Road Warriors & Demolition, while claiming to be better. This lead to them being beaten down by teams like The APA, New Age Outlaws and more, ending any chance of stardom as they were being beaten down by retired wrestlers.
Despite this, they kept their fanbase, with kids in particular being attached to their look. They were comic book villians come to life, and it is a shock that WWE didn’t cash in on this more. Here you have two hulking men who can work a good match and that have the look perfect, yet nothing happened with them. While they teamed with Stardust as Cosmic Wasteland to play with this idea, it was short lived like any glimmer of hope for the team. They could have been a team who moved countless action figures, but they were never given the chance.
What Have The Ascenion Been Up To Since Leaving WWE?
Back in December, there was a block of releases from WWE including The Ascension, Luke Harper, and Sin Cara. While Sin Cara resurfaced down in Mexico, and Luke Harper is The Exalted One in AEW, The Ascension have stayed more quiet.
Now called The Wasteland Walkers, they have been working small indy promotions, with only one big annonced match since leaving where they would have teamed with Warhorse to face ‘The Gaytanic Brood’ of Effy, Danhausen & Gangrel. That match was announced three weeks ago for Warhausens Wrestlevania, an event likely cancelled in the wake of COVID-19 like most events that were part of Wrestlemania weekend.
Hopefully once wrestling stabilizes, we can see these two men find a home in a major promotion once again, where they can finally show people what they have been missing out on. Do you think WWE wasted their chance with The Ascension? Let us know in the comment section down below.
