Despite it all, we’re here now. We’ve made it to the weekend. And WWE’s gonna go through with this. Regardless of what anyone thinks, no matter what’s right or wrong, WrestleMania 36 is upon us. And man, it’s a bizarre thing to say the least. We’re about to see WrestleMania play out over the span of two nights with no fans in attendance whatsoever. It’s safe to say that the whole world is in disarray right now. WWE is no different, no matter how much they might want to pretend that what happens outside their bubble has no bearing on them. But a rare match that doesn’t have to be affected too severely by the situation is one pitting Daniel Bryan against Sami Zayn with the latter’s Intercontinental Championship on the line.
It was only over the past year that I started writing about wrestling for a living. Suffice to say, I would not have guessed that the first WrestleMania I covered would be anything like this. Nevertheless… my name is Jordan Huie and I’m truly glad to have you here with us at the Overtimer. You can rest assured that we’ll be giving you the same coverage as always for WrestleMania. This year’s iteration, if nothing else, will be wholly different from any other. So with all that said… let’s get to the previews, as I have plenty left to write.
(Note: At the time of writing, WWE have not announced which matches will be airing on which day.)
WWE Intercontinental Championship: Sami Zayn © vs. Daniel Bryan
It’s kind of depressing to me that when I first heard of this match being announced, my immediate thought was, “Wow I sure hope Sami is portrayed as a wrestler in this match”. That’s pretty unfortunate considering that Sami Zayn is one of the best workers in not just WWE but the entire damn world. His transition to managerial status and the fact that he hasn’t taken a bump in nearly a year was enough to make people wonder if he’s even been cleared this whole time. He’s assured everyone in interview that he’s not injured though, which makes it all the more confusing that he’s been used this way.
Make no mistake, Daniel Bryan and Sami Zayn wrestling for the Intercontinental title at WrestleMania should be an instant classic in the making. In fact it SHOULD be perhaps the easiest bet for a great match for any combination of wrestlers under the WWE banner. And that’s even in this scenario. Daniel Bryan has proven that he’s able to wrestle a damn good TV match with no crowd simply by doing what he does best, and I have no doubt Sami could do the same.
Sadly, judging by how he’s been portrayed over the last year, there’s really no reason to expect this to be anything other than Sami running away the whole match as Shinsuke Nakamura and Cesaro constantly run-in to get in Bryan’s way. Which could be fun but a far cry but what it’s potential would be. I’d like to hope that the brass can see reason, given the circumstance, and just let them go. Either way, I’m picking Daniel Bryan to win. I think WWE have wanted to park the Intercontinental title on Bryan for years, but injuries kept getting in the way of that.
