In 2019, Baron Corbin became a regal figure in WWE when he won the King of The Ring tournament, beating Chad Gable in the finals. Since that day, his ego has been inflated. He has Bobby Roode & Dolph Ziggler on call for backup, a scepter to dish out pain, and some cool entrance gear with his fur rope and iron crown. He fits the look of a king, and carries himself like a top heel. Should he have to defend his crown?
Giving King Corbin Matches More Meaning
King Corbin might be one of the more underrated performers in WWE, being an agile bruiser, but people are not a big fan of him. This makes it hard to get into this matches, especially as they usually have a messy finish, like the roll up by Elias at Wrestlemania 36 in one of the worst matches from the card. There was nothing on the line, and a a rushed build didn’t help. However, had WWE out the King of The Ring crown on the line for this match, fan interest would have risen for this thrown together match. It would give King Corbin extra reason to want to win his matches, as losing means he loses his entire identity.
The King Of The Ring Crown Has Been Defended In The Past
In the late 80’s, Harley Race was King of The Ring but would go down with an abdominal injury. Because of this, Haku became king. Harley Race would return and challenge Haku for the crown, albeit unsuccessfully. Haku would lose the crown to ‘Hacksaw’ Jim Duggen, who then lost it to the ‘Macho Man’ Randy Savage, who became the Macho King until he lost a career threatening match to Ultimate Warrior. The crown has not been defended in this manner since, but is part of the legacy. This would essentially allow this to work as a lowercard championship, which while WWE has an insane amount of titles, would still help to add interest to the feuds of King Corbin.
Do you think King Corbin should have to defend his crown? Will WWE do another King of The Ring in 2020 where the winner gets to face Corbin for the crown in the end? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
