Olympic gold medal wrestler Gable Steveson was hyped as a good seed for WWE following the 2020 Olympic Games. A RAW superstar, he made his WWE debut at WrestleMania 38 but hadn’t been seen much since. He was said to be training remotely in his native Minnesota but there was never much about the progress of his training.
What is the Future of the WWE-Gable Steveson Relationship with the Olympic Gold Medalist Continuing His Amateur Wrestling Career
According to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Gable Steveson has other business he wants to take care of before joining WWE as a regular superstar. He has a year of eligibility left within the NCAA system and he’s aiming for a third heavyweight champion. This would bring him into the 2023-2024 season—right up against the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
Steveson is only 23 years old at the moment and of course, he’ll want another gold medal on the global stage. That would push the time he can commit to both training for pro wrestling and getting integrated into the on-screen product. We’re talking late 2024-early 2025 depending on naturally he takes to wrestling and how his remote training went.
It could be later as Meltzer said that Steveson had been training in MMA, something the young athlete mentioned as a potential future after his amateur career. At the moment, WWE hasn’t given the green light for Steveson’s other business but is allowing him to wrestle in a world championship competition.
In controlling his schedule WWE is looking to avoid any extra delays in getting Steveson in the system—that includes non-WWE involved injuries and obligations. The company managed to get him on a contract at a point where he was exploring his options and seeing what was next.
You could say that WWE pretty much put a long-term path in place as amateur wrestlers don’t have a direct path to continue wrestling. The close things are MMA, pro wrestling, stacked annual tournaments, and coaching collegiate teams.
With WWE and UFC merging to form TKO Group Holdings, Steveson might be able to participate in both—that’s a soft “might”.
