Over the last three years we’ve grown used to seeing Roman Reigns dominate like Vince McMahon originally envisioned, except as a heel and not a face.
It’s all good since it’s been a fun ride and Reigns has really taken the world by storm, and as we get ready to head into Money in the Bank this weekend and the Bloodline Civil War takes a huge turn, we discovered a interesting storyline angle in his career.
As was a great staple of drama for years, a close friend of family member turning on a face would always give the matches that extra feel of being personal.
Betrayals Have Marked Roman Reigns’ Career
It became a really popular gimmick with Hulk Hogan as he faced betrayals right and left from Paul Orndorff, Randy Savage, and Andre the Giant.
All three of those lead to some of the best feuds of the decade.
Hogan had to fight off the betrayal of having those he considered brothers turn on him for their chance at becoming the world champion and he had to fight them off and did at every turn.
Roman Reigns has faced four betrayals by those close to him, but unlike Hogan, he brought most of them on himself.
Let’s take a peek.
Squeezing the life out of them
There’s an old adage about trying to hold onto something so desperately we squeeze the life out of them.
In Roman Reigns’ case, that’s certainly true about how he’s handled the Bloodline recently, but it all started with the Shield and Seth Rollins’ betrayal and the chair shot heard round the world.
It’s still referenced heavily today whenever we get Rollins and Reigns face off over anything.
While that’s left a lasting mark (pun intended), the last three are ones that have defined the most memorable and dominant run in Reigns’ career.
When the Bloodline began, he got everyone to buy into the idea, including Sami Zayn.
But then he started treating everyone like they were beneath him instead of the family they were, and the dominoes started to fall.
First Zayn turned on him when he demanded he destroy Kevin Owens, and then Jimmy Uso, and Jey followed.
With Reigns growing desperate and his kingdom crumbling, it’s possible Solo Sikoa will turn on him at Money in the Bank since the Usos are his blood brothers.
The question is will these betrayals finally put him on the path of redemption, or will be continue his downward spiral? Let us know in the comments below.
