In the world of professional wrestling, there is always a risk of injury when you enter the ring. This doubles when any type of hardcore stipulation is placed into a match, adding weapons only ups the level of danger.
We would recently see a hardcore style match take the main event spot for Summerslam 2023 – with Roman Reigns facing Jey Uso in ‘Tribal Combat’. Reigns made it out with the win, but didn’t leave without some damage.
Roman Reigns Suffered An Injury Early In Summerslam Main Event
We would get a report from Dave Meltzer about an injury suffered by Roman Reigns during the Summerslam main event – with the following information.
“Roman Reigns got hurt in that match… I heard it was relatively early. I don’t know the nature of the injury, I just heard he worked the match hurt. He got hurt early in the match.
I don’t know what his schedule is but he’s going to be on the show Friday night. I would presume he’s going to be on Survivor Series, I don’t know that as fact.”
Many believe the injury came when Jey Uso dove from the ring and landed on the lower back of Reigns with a dive. This was the first big spot of the match, and it’s awkward landing had fans worried. Reigns was able to power through the match all the same, and him being injured might not be that big of a deal with him as champion.
WWE Can Keep Pushing Forward With This Reign, Unless WrestleMania Is Near
Simply put, the in-ring schedule of Roman Reigns ensures that if he’s hurt, he will be given time to heal without being stripped of his belt.
This is unlikely to be the first injury during his reign, which has passed 1000 days. Unless an injury happened just ahead of a show like WrestleMania, WWE can work around it – to ensure this historic reign keeps pushing forward.
WWE has introduced the WWE World Heavyweight Championship for this exact purpose, and why they are grooming The Judgement Day as a top faction.
At this point, WWE wants Reigns to start breaking the top records in the history books – with him atleast breaking the second reign of Bruno Sammartino, which comes in early 2024.
Reigns’ condition has not been fully addressed by WWE, but he’s intended to appear on this Friday’s episode of Smackdown Live in a promo segment.
