While the August 18th edition of WWE Smackdown was touted as Edge’s last contractual match with the WWE, and he closed it out with a classic brawl with Sheamus as they left everything in the ring.
Edge eventually won and the two embraced as the show went off the air, but there was a lot more to come.
After the match, a teary eyed Edge spoke to the fans and seemed to say goodbye for the final time as he said, “This is my last time in front of you all. I don’t think that I can make another full year here again for a match.”
This wasn’t a surprise as many, including us, speculated he may be retiring after this match, but it’s a moment all fans that were there will appreciate.
A fan recorded the whole speech as a WWE cameraman was in the ring, so we’ll see it again on a special release or commemorative segment.
Lasting legacy
Edge was one of the top stars in the WWE before an injured neck sent him into an early retirement for ten years, but he was more than that.
As we got to see in prerecorded clips during the show, past and present WWE superstars gave their respects to him and talked about what he meant to them and the business.
But he wasn’t done yet.
Imperium came out and attacked him, and Drew McIntyre, Sami Zayn, and Kevin Owens and this resulted in a dark match after the show, with Edge’s team being victorious.
It was a cool Curtain Call type of moment, except this was pre-planned and didn’t blur the lines between faces and heels.
It was a cool moment and a bonus match for the local fans, but it does make it seem that Edge really is retiring, so that’s a ceremony or announcement we can expect in the next week or so.
Or he could stick around to be an on air or backstage talent to work with the younger stars for a while. There are plenty of possibilities and we’re sure we’ll learn more about it over the next few weeks.
As of now, it looks like he’s helping to reenergize the feud between Imperium and McIntyre, Owens, and Zayn, or this could be a throw away match since it’s not considered canon for not happening on Smackdown.
