Over the past week, social media and wrestling news sites and pages have been sharing tributes and memories about Bray Wyatt (Windham Rotonda) from his fellow wrestlers and it’s been fun and heart breaking to hear what a great person he was and how much he’ll be missed.
That’s the ultimate legacy in a lot of ways as no one will ever forget him. The tributes have been largely personal, and on the latest “Extreme Life of Matt Hardy”, Matt paid his own tribute to Wyatt.
Deeper than a boss and employee
He also touched on Wyatt’s relationship with Vince McMahon in a touching and cool moment. Matt said they had a father-son type of relationship as whenever Vince was happy Wyatt was too, and when Vince was upset or displeased so was Wyatt.
“Him and Vince had a very interesting relationship, almost like a father-son relationship in some ways. I feel like that probably came to be because he had only known the WWE system, so Vince was the only boss he ever had. I feel like there’s times when Vince shows you all this love, but then if you do something he doesn’t necessarily like or he disagrees with, then he’s really tough on you like a father in many ways. I feel like they, more than a lot of wrestlers who work under Vince, they had this weird, almost father-son relationship. If Vince was mad at him, he would be very sad and disappointed, like, oh my God, I didn’t make him happy. Then there were times where he would be totally upset with him. Then there were times that Vince treated him so good and he wanted to move him into the best spot possible and he would love his stuff and he would call him a genius and say that was brilliant and this was great. It was interesting. It feels like their relationship was deeper than just boss-employee. It was almost personal like he was a father figure to Bray in some ways. If Bray made him happy, it made Bray happy. If Bray made him upset, it made Bray disappointed.”
This is pretty cool, though it does make us wonder about Wyatt’s last couple of years with how his Fiend character was basically destroyed by the Hell in a Cell match with Seth Rollins and then in the squash loss to Bill Goldberg for the Universal Championship.
That can be chalked up to Vince not understanding the character and that happens, but then to release Wyatt it feels like their relationship went back and forth, or was maybe one sided in the father-son aspect.
It’s curious to note, but at the same time we have no doubt Wyatt’s death affected Vince. After all, there’s business and then there’s personal.
