This past Wednesday was a grim day for WWE. Nearly 40% of their staff was let go, including many wrestlers like Rusev, EC3, Karl Anderson and Heath Slater. Most of the undercard was let go as a cost-cutting measure, leaving many without a job at a time when no company can hire them back. There was one man who would have been on the chopping block for the company, had he not been elevated by former WWE Champion Daniel Bryan, this being Drew Gulak.
Their Feud Turned Drew Gulak Into A Star On Smackdown
On the build to Elimination Chamber, Drew Gulak started to pick apart the style of Daniel Bryan backstage. Having come up through wrestling studying countless hours of tape on Bryan, he knew Bryan better than he knew himself, including his weaknesses. This would lead to the best match at Elimination Chamber, when they went out and had a match reminiscent of bouts between Kurt Angle & Chris Beniot, a technical wrestling masterclass. Bryan won, but Gulak became a star as he countered every piece of offense Bryan had. Since that day, Gulak has become a coach for Bryan, and they have been feuding with the trio of Sami Zayn, Cesaro & Shinsuke Nakamura.
Before This Angle, Gulak Was Directionless In WWE
After leaving the Cruiserweight division to become part of the Smackdown Live roster, Gulak was barely on TV until Daniel Bryan would campaign to get him on the show more often. This has worked out brilliantly, as Gulak is quickly entering the role that Daniel will leave when he goes on paterinty leave later this year.
Keeping all this in mind, it was very likely that had Daniel Bryan not pushed to have this angle with Drew Gulak, he would have been looked at as non-essential to WWE at this time and been released with the others. Instead, he very well could be on his way to his first ever WWE Intercontinental Championship, or being in the Money In The Bank ladder match. He has won fans over with his hard hitting technical style, and is on his way to serious success.
