Despite only having a handful of matches together, the history between AJ Styles & Shinsuke Nakamura is storied. Two of the best wrestlers in the world, they are able to generate a massive amount of hype whenever their names are mentioned next to each other. This has been drummed up once again. WWE recently posted their Last Man Standing match from Money In The Bank 2018, and Nakamura had something to say about this. He simply said “This will continue, not finished.” which has fans buzzing once again. Will Shinsuke Nakamura & AJ Styles clash again?
Their History Summerized
Their first clash came in New Japan Pro Wrestling for Wrestle Kingdom 10, which was a critically acclaimed match that was overshadowed by Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Kazuchika Okada in the main event. It was the first time they ever met in singles action, but they had clashed in tag team matches in the past. Nakamura would win in this match, and both men would soon leave NJPW, with both ending up in WWE. AJ Styles made his way there for the 2016 Royal Rumble, and Nakamura debuted against Sami Zayn in NXT. Both found title success, Nakamura winning two NXT Championships, and AJ Styles winning the WWE Championship.
The WWE Championship would serve as the catalyst for their WWE feud. Nakamura had previously faced Jinder Mahal for the title and failed to take it away from him, but he would win the Royal Rumble in 2018 which put him on the fast track to a world championship match at Wrestlemania. His choice was simple, as AJ Styles was the current WWE Champion. It was hyped by WWE as a dream match, and was the best pure wrestling encounter for their WWE feud, with Styles winning in the end. The post match would show Nakamura deliver a crushing low blow, which turned him heel. They would meet again at Greatest Royal Rumble & Backlash, with neither match having a clear finish. So their match at Money In The Bank would be under Last Man Standing rules, and Styles would win the feud.
AJ Styles vs. Shinsuke Nakamura One More Time
Their feud in WWE left a poor taste in the mouths of many fans, feeling they never got the match they wanted from these two. Comparisons to their NJPW classic are unavoidable, and we might never see something top that initial magic. However, they seem to be destined to have at-least one more match. AJ is currently on RAW, and Shinsuke on Smackdown. It will be some time before they clash again, but it will happen.
