One of the weirdest storylines in recent memory for WWE was Erick Rowan and his caged animal. For months before his eventual release Rowan would come down to the ring with a large cage in hand. It drew comparrisons to Jake ‘The Snake’ Roberts, but with more mystery as no one knew what was supposed to be in the cage; not even Rowan himself.
Erick Rowan Didn’t Know What Was In The Cage
During an interview with Lewis Nicholls on The Lewis Nicholls Show, Rowan would finally give the true answer to ‘What’s in the cage?’ In the end, it was revealed to be a giant spider, just a week before Drew McIntyre would crush it on Monday Night RAW. However, this is only part of the story when it comes to this.
“I was always figured in somehow, so I couldn’t really be upset. I had the cage thing, whatever that was, but it kept me on television. Good or bad it kept me on. That’s what I always say to people; good or bad, you try to make the best you can with it. Sometimes, you can make good out of it, but sometimes, the writing is the writing. I don’t know what happened. I put stuff in there, just in case somebody peeked through, you never know if something is going to fall out. Nobody told me to do it, but I put stuff in there just in case. One time, I made a stuffed animal. Just stupid things so if someone looked through, there was a shape. I didn’t know what was going to be in there.”
A Perfect Sign Of WWE’s Creative Flaws
This shows the lack of creative direction that WWE took with this idea, they had the bare bones down; Rowan had a mysterious creature in the cage. That was always clear, but at the end of the day, no one knew what it should be. By the time they decided to reveal the creature, people were sick of the angle, and would have been underwhelmed no matter what was in there. It could have been used to build Rowan up into a star, he had already proved he could work with the best of them during his feud with Roman Reigns, and this could have been the gimmick to back that up. Instead it was squandered, and he was released as a cost-saving measure.
