WWE Backlash 2020 continues. The Miz and John Morrison are told backstage that if they win, the one who pins Braun Strowman will become the new Universal Champion, this in spite of them wanting to work as co-champs. This pretty much tells you the two of them will have tension as they have to figure out which of them gets the pin. Fortunately I doubt that’s going to end up being much of a big deal here… also Otis and Mandy Rose remind them of the nasty things they said about Otis and let them know that even if they do win, they might not be champs for too long. But before any of that happens, we got Asuka defending the WWE Raw Women’s Championship against Nia Jax – and an attempt to avenge her fallen friend Kairi Sane.

WWE Raw Women’s Championship: Asuka (c) vs. Nia Jax

We start with Asuka getting leg kicks, bunch of hands to the face, looking for the Piggyback Sleeper but Nia throws her down, stops a Fujiwara Armbar with a right hand. Headbutt to the face takes Asuka to the corner. Boot up on a charge, Nia avoids a spinning backfist and pummels her in the corner. Asuka leaps out of the corner with an Octopus Stretch! It’s in deep for a few moments but then Jax just throws her to the mat! Clothesline lands flush. Nia pulls her up, Asuka with an arm bar but gets whipped, body block takes her down! Biel throw sends her across the ring, avalanche in the corner and another biel!

Pulls her up, big scoop slam. Cover for a 2 count. Nia keeps control, spinebuster for a 2 count. Headlock cinched in, Asuka fighting to her feet, back elbows. Spins into a guillotine, but Nia powers her out and basically plants her with a Jackhammer out of nowhere! Nearfall! Easily one of the coolest things she’s ever done there. Asuka with a spinning backfist, spin kicks, wants a sunset flip but Jax is Big, tries to sit down on her but Asuka avoids it, basement dropkick for a nearfall! Roundhouse kicks to the shoulder, wants to whip her but Nia throws her to the corner, Asuka leaps up to the middle rope for a flying dropkick! Charging Hip Attack for a nearfall! Asuka with a series of roundhouse kicks, one to the head, but Nia just ignores it all and plants her with a big powerbomb for a nearfall! Asuka evades a charge and sends her into the post! Asuka going up top, Nia stops her. Jax goes up there with her but Asuka with an armbar drags her off the top and slowly to the floor! Asuka charges and flips her into a Cross-Armbreaker as the count is going on! Jax lifts her up and swings her into the barricade, counts at 7! Hoists her up, Asuka escapes, roundhouse kick to the face and there’s the ten count.

    Winner: N/A

I know we all wanted to see this extended to a second Nia Jax PPV title match, let’s not pretend. Afterwards Asuka gets her with a hip attack to the face off the apron.

Also during this match the ‘crowd’ had this weird beat going, clap-clap-clapclap-clapclap and eventually it turned into a chant and I have no idea where it came from. Kinda threw me off.

I’m a hardcore wrestling fan, by which I mean I’m a hardcore fan of wrestling... but I also have nothing against hardcore wrestling! I’ve been watching since 2006, back when I was 12 years old. In that time I’ve fervently followed WWE, TNA, ROH, Lucha Underground and others. Today I’m most passionate about NXT, New Japan and especially AEW! You could call me a modern wrestling savant but I know my old school stuff as well... I’ll be your huckleberry all night long.
