Despite his past coming back to haunt him, Matt Riddle should be completely fine on Friday Night Smackdown. He’s already had two fantastic matches against AJ Styles & John Morrison, and this past week also let us know why he wrestles barefoot in a promo. Reports indicate that he originally told this story to Vince McMahon backstage, and he absolutely loved it. So much so that he allowed Riddle to tell it his own way on Smackdown, and that Riddle is likely to get more input and freedom in his promos than most NXT call ups.
Vince McMahon Compared Matt Riddle To A Young Shawn Michaels
From the moment he came into WWE, the attitude of Riddle rubbed some people the wrong way. He’s super cocky, confident and talented, and the type of marches to the beat of his own drum. While you’d think this would put him in bad territory with Vince McMahon, who most view as a control freak, it’s the complete opposite. He’s had his eye on Riddle & Keith Lee since last November, with a WWE source telling WrestlingNews.co the following.
“Vince likes guys like Shawn who have that rebel mentality and he sees some of Shawn in Matt. Matt can rub some people the wrong way but he’s a good guy and he will do great when Vince calls him up. I think he’s a future world champion. Vince will try to tweak him but his personality will get him far.”
Being compared to one of the more memorable champions in one of the more profitable chapters of WWE by the boss himself is a huge deal, and you can see the comparrisons yourself.
Being Compared To Michaels Is Becoming Cliche
While this is major praise, given where it comes from, Riddle is not the first man to be compared to Michaels, and he won’t be the last. Any smaller, cocky and talented wrestler will generally get this comparrison, be it Dolph Ziggler, Adam Cole, Seth Rollins, and countless others outside of WWE like The Young Bucks & Kenny Omega. Even Michaels himself is comparing talents like NXT’s Dakota Kai to himself, with her muscle Raquel Gonzalez being compared to Diesel.
Eventually, we’re going to need someone new for talented wrestlers to be compared to. It might be Rollins, Styles or perhaps even Matt Riddle if Vince McMahon doesn’t sour on him.
