With the current vocal battle going on between WWE’s Seth Rollins and AEW’s top commentator Jim Ross, many fans have chosen sides and look for any way or reason to defend their chosen heroes.
The point of contention for many is the term “minor league.”
This is the term Seth Rollins used to describe AEW because he either honestly feels this way, or believes it’s his job to defend the WWE no matter what. Granted, if any of us were paid millions we may have the same loyalty.
WWE NXT is Minor League
Many fans point to Kenny Omega’s comments about the wrestlers on NXT being in a dark match, or the opening match before his main event match.
Yep, it sounds insulting. How are he say that about another company? How is that not ruining the business like Jim Ross claimed Rollins’ comments are doing?
By definition, WWE NXT is a minor league. A minor league is where unproved talent goes to sharpen their skills before being called up to the majors. They have them in just about every sport.
What makes this unique is that WWE NXT is praised by fans and critics as being superior to the WWE’s “major” brands. But as long as the WWE lists and treats NXT as their developmental brand, it will continue to be a minor league.
But they’re talented
Yes, NXT is loaded with talent and it’s run by a proven booker named Triple H. It’s because of his vision and the talent he’s helped develop as to why NXT is as great as it is, and it is great.
That doesn’t change the fact about what it is. Minor league teams can be more talented or look better than the majors. It happens.
Why put NXT in this position?
There are a few reasons. First is, NXT is widely considered the WWE’s top brand despite being a developmental brand, so in a way, Vince McMahon is putting his best against AEW.
Secondly, by being directly across from AEW, NXT bleeds off AEW’s ratings by splitting the audience. It’s the exact thing Vince McMahon said was the result of putting a show across from the competition. The reason was to hurt the opposition. He said both of those on the Monday Night War dvd and criticized Eric Bischoff for doing that.
Thirdly, if NXT losses the ratings war, Vince McMahon can write it off as “only a developmental brand” and hope loyal WWE fans buy into it and not question him. To help with the ratings, the show regularly goes over eight minutes, adding the next hour’s first quarter hour ratings to their own. Another trick her learned from Eric Bischoff during the Monday Night War.
When it comes right down to it, it appears Vince McMahon is going against the same things he preached for years to win a war he started. Things are going to get interesting.
