The Miz has got very candid on his journey into WWE, particularly the struggles that he had experienced.
The Miz Opens Up On His Difficulties In WWE
During an interview on the Oral Sessions podcast, he revealed how his WWE career was hampered by his reality TV career. This was despite having four years of independent wrestling experience. He said: “Nobody would audition me because they said, ‘We know who you are. You’re The Miz from The Real World.
“You’re Mike from The Real World. You’re just a reality star.’ So when I got to WWE, nobody wanted me there because I was a reality star. Nobody wanted to learn that I was doing independent wrestling. I was trying to learn the craft. Nobody cared. Back then, it was way different than it is now.”
But that did not stop The Miz as it made him even more determined to achieve his dream. He made it his mission to tap into the merchandise area in an attempt to catch the attention of WWE. He added: “I saw WWE was big into merchandise, so I made these T-Shirts and created a brand. I had everyone on the show wear these T-Shirts and wear the hats. Every cast member was so supportive of me being a WWE Superstar.
“Still, WWE never came calling. I think I sold, in my first year, $100,000 worth of T-Shirts. Everyone that ever bought a T-Shirt from me, I did it. I put it in the envelope. I would go to the post office every day.
The sacrifices, however, have all paid off, and Miz has nothing but praise for the WWE. One man, in particular, Vince McMahon, remains on top of the list. His guidance has been crucial to Miz’s development. He continued: “I think Vince has always believed in me.
“It’s always been incredible, in my mind, that whenever I’ve had a conversation with him, I think he can tell that if he tells me something, I don’t just hear it. I listen to it, I absorb it, and I’m able to get exactly what he wants out of it and make sure that the big picture is in place.”
