Big Cass Opens Up About Being a Recovering Alcoholic + Return To the Ring

Big Cass has spoken on how he overcame his drinking problem to mark a successful return to the wrestling ring. And since his return, he has been praised for his prime physical condition, much like that of Bobby Lashley.

Big Cass Opens Up On Recovering From His Drinking Problems

In an interview with Louis Dangoor of WrestleTalk, Big Cass revealed how the return was a battle of the mind. He said: “It was just a long, long journey, man. I had been in and out of rehab a few times, and it just wasn’t clicking, and then I went back to rehab last January, and everything started clicking at that point.”

The wrestler had struggled with how to overcome his problems. He considered professional help and ended up joining an Alcoholics Anonymous group. But to do so required a lot of courage and it even changed his initial perceptions once Big Cass realised it was working.

He added: “I embraced the fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous, which I beforehand thought was silly, and I really, really started focusing on my recovery and myself, and magically when you do that, you just start to get happier. It’s as if it’s this thing that millions of people had done.”

He did almost walk away from the sport. His erratic behaviour had gotten out of control to the point where he had attacked other wrestlers. The incident in question involved a confrontation in which Big Cass, along with Enzo Amore, jumped some cordons at Madison Square Gardens before letting loose on the others. Following that, Big Cass nearly called it a day.

He stated: “I wasn’t sure about wrestling [anymore]. I kinda thought maybe that wasn’t for me anymore. About four months ago, I woke up with a clear head and was like, ‘I really love wrestling. It is like my first love and my passion.’ I was like, ‘I gotta go back.”

But the desire for wrestling was burning deep inside, and after reflecting, he had no qualms about overcoming his demons. Such a success story must be celebrated and give hope to other wrestlers such as Big Swole (who deals with Crohn’s disease) that anything is possible.

He continued: “I could have let my addiction stop me from doing what I really want to do, I could’ve taken the easy road and done something a lot easier and less fulfilling, but instead, I decided I was gonna come back to wrestling.”
