Tyson Fury, one of the world’s heavyweight champions alongside Anthony Joshua, has revealed that he had intended to return to WWE before the pandemic had put an end to those plans.
Tyson Fury Was On Course For WWE Return Only For Covid To Stop Those Plans
The boxer made waves in 2019 after he had beaten the behemoth Braun Strowman. The latter, who has been recently mocked for being a little ‘stupid’, was made to act that way as Tyson beat him to the count. The reception from fans was insane as the boxer had gotten the most pay-per-view numbers in that year.
Although that had been helped by his impressive performances in boxing, notably his two fights with Deontay Wilder, it was still remarkable. In an interview on Behind The Gloves, Tyson revealed how he was on course for two WWE events. He said: “I was supposed to go to SummerSlam last year, and I was supposed to go to WrestleMania last year.”
So who were the opponents in question? Well, it transpired that they were some of the biggest names in the world of wrestling. One, in particular, had even defeated the imperious Brock Lesnar. He added: “I was also supposed to fight Drew McIntyre in a PPV event in the UK, but none of that happened, thanks to COVID.
“So, COVID has cost me SummerSlam, [WrestleMania], PPV with Drew McIntyre, the [Deontay] Wilder rematch, and the [Anthony] Joshua fight. So, thank you, COVID.” And it seemed Drew was also keen on the bout. Although he has not commented on Tyson’s interview, a previous interview by him did hint that such things were in the pipeline. Naturally, covid came at the wrong time.
In an interview with Inside the Ropes, Drew said: “This situation has affected a lot of plans, let’s just say things were looking positive and when things are looking a little bit more normal. I’ll be pushing once again because we’re on the right path and it’s not a case of if it will happen.
“It’s when it will happen, we’ve just got to roll with the punches right now and eventually we will get that UK PPV we deserve.” It was such a disappointment not to see this going ahead, but let us hope that these plans can be revived once again.
