Paul Felder, the ‘Irish Dragon’ lightweight contender, said goodbye to mixed martial arts.
This past Saturday during the UFC Fight Night Vegas 27 broadcast, Paul broke the news. Felder, who currently serves as the promoter’s commentator, announced his retirement. With a record of 17 wins and 6 losses, 9-6 in UFC, he says goodbye to mixed martial arts.
Felder admitted that he had been lacking that spark of excitement lately and that he didn’t see a starting opportunity nearby either, so he decided to step aside.
Paul Felder announces his retirement from mixed martial arts
“I don’t have a burning desire to fight a few more years and become champion. I always said that if I don’t see the title picture in a year or so, I would retire and I would do it for my friends, for my family and for me. I’m 37 years old and I feel very fresh. I’m officially retiring from the sport.”
Paul Felder entered the company undefeated and debuted with a victory in 2014. For seven years he starred in extraordinary wars inside the octagon. Among the most notable were fights with Edson Barboza, Mike Perry and Dan Hooker. He also beat the current 155-pound champion, Charles Oliveira, by KO.
Throughout his career he managed to accumulate a total of six bonuses: three ‘Fight of the Night’ and three ‘Performance of the Night’.
The last time the ‘Irish Dragon’ stepped into the cage was in November last year. He took on former lightweight champion Rafael Dos Anjos in the UFC Vegas 14 headliner. He took the fight on five days notice, replacing Islam Makhachev. Despite not preparing properly, Felder made the weight and made the cut during the bout. But unfortunately he lost by split decision.
Paul Felder retires from the sport having been a protagonist of great battles, and as one of the most beloved.
“I love UFC with all my heart, for everything they gave me and for the opportunity they granted me to be a commentator.”
