Colby Covington sees no value in Conor McGregor’s name. While defeating the former double champ may once have been a serious win, Covington doesn’t see it that way any more.
Covington, speaking to MMAFighting.com, backed Poirier to take the trilogy, but in typical dismissive style, said “it’s not saying much” to defeat the Irishman:
Colby Covington DISRESPECTS Conor McGregor: ‘It’s not saying much’ to beat Notorious
“You’re beating a guy that has no motivation left in the sport. And I love Conor. He’s had a great career, done great things in the sport, but you’re time’s up, too.
It’s obvious that you’re not training every day, it’s obvious you’re not working on your craft, it’s obvious you’re working on other business deals to line your pockets and pad your bank account.
It’s just not the same hungry Conor from a couple of years ago. It’s a different Conor towards the end of his journey and it’s not saying much to beat him anymore.”
Conor McGregor remains the UFC’s biggest name, but Colby may have a point. Nate Diaz was the first man to defeat Conor McGregor, and doing so catapulted the Ultimate Fighter star to superstardom. Diaz has been riding the wave of this victory despite a decision loss in their rematch.
Khabib Nurmagomedov, who was the UFC’s hottest property in Russia and throughout the Arab world, saw his fortunes rise when he choked McGregor out in the Irishman’s comeback fight in 2018. The post-fight brawl featuring Khabib’s family may have helped, too.
Dustin Poirier already knocked McGregor out once this year, becoming the first MMA fighter ever to do so. Should he win again this Saturday, he will become the first fighter ever to hand McGregor two consecutive losses.
Colby, for his part, is supposedly due for a rematch against Kamaru Usman later this year. The UFC has not yet confirmed a date, and Covington claims that Usman has been “running scared” of the fight. Kamaru “The Nigerian Nightmare” Usman knocked Covington out in the final round of their initial bout, which was Usman’s first title defence.
Usman’s striking has only improved since then, and the intensity of their rivalry has only increased. A bout between the two seems inevitable, albeit with an unclear timeline.
What do you think? Will McGregor repeat his performance against Nate Diaz and take the trilogy? Will Dustin take McGregor out and go on to challenge Charles Oliveira for the title? Let us know what you think in the comments.
