Jorge Masvidal is eyeing a comeback. The Miami fighter is fresh off the back of consecutive losses to Kamaru Usman, and claims he plans to return to the promotion this fall.
“Gamebred” will have been sorely disappointed with the outcomes of these two fights, and will look to take on a ranked fighter for his comeback. According to Ariel Helwani’s Twitter, Masvidal either wants Colby Covington or Nick Diaz:
Masvidal wants a major contender for his comeback fight…
“Spoke to Jorge Masvidal’s manager, Abraham Kawa, about what’s next for Masvidal. He said Masvidal is targeting a return in October/November against either Nick Diaz or Colby Covington.”
Either fight makes a lot of sense for Jorge Masvidal. He and Covington used to be friends and teammates, but have recently taken to calling one another out on social media. They had a big falling out at some point, and a grudge match between the two would be a big fight for the UFC.
Colby Covington remains steadfast in his pursuit of a rematch against Kamaru Usman, so it’s unlikely that he would take a Masvidal fight until after he challenges for the title.
Perhaps more likely is a Nick Diaz bout. Masvidal was actually supposed to fight Nick Diaz at UFC 235, which never happened. Masvidal famously fought Diaz’s brother Nate for the “BMF” belt, which Jorge won via a controversial doctor stoppage. Nick will come out seeking revenge for his brother, and perhaps the BMF belt would even be on the line.
Masvidal was once considered one of the finest strikers in the welterweight division. In their first fight, Kamaru Usman used his superior wrestling ability to pin Masvidal to the fence and dominate him with strikes. In their second, Usman knocked Masvidal out in only the second round, sending his opponent to the floor and following up with a flurry of strikes.
Masvidal needs a win to break his losing streak. Before he took on Kamaru Usman, Gamebred was on a serious winning streak, knocking out the likes of Darren Till, Nate Diaz, and Ben Askren. His Askren knockout took only seconds, a victory that came through a flying knee to Askren’s head.
Jorge won’t be challenging for UFC gold anytime soon unless he can return to his winning ways, but after his rise to the top he can’t take on just any opponent. Jorge must regain his lethal reputation, and only a win over a top contender will do it.
Which fight would you rather see? Should Masvidal take on Covington or Diaz? Let us know in the comments.
