In case you missed it, Louis Smolka pulled out of his scheduled match against Sean O’Malley at UFC 264. He’s since been replaced by Kris Moutinho, but not before O’Malley reacted to the news in typically brash style.
O’Malley claims that Smolka abandoned the fight due to fear of “Suga” Sean’s fighting prowess. Supposedly, Smolka’s manager visited O’Malley’s gym, where he watched Sean train.
O’Malley: “Scared” Smolka was “licking wrestling mats trying to get staph”
So impressive was Sean O’Malley’s sparring (at least according to Sean O’Malley), that Smolka may have deliberately contracted staph to get out of the scheduled bout: “Smolka’s manager was at my gym watching me spar the other day, a couple of weeks ago.
I was on fire. He asked Tim and I, respectfully, he said ‘hey, do you mind if I sit and watch?’ I said ‘watch, tell him whatever you want, I don’t care.’ I looked sharp, I was on fucking fire.
Did his manager go ‘hey bud, I love you, don’t take this fight, I don’t want you to die?’ Might’ve. Smolka licking f*cking wrestling mats trying to get staph.”
O’Malley, with a 13-1 professional record, is one of the bantamweight division’s rising stars, who returned to winning ways with a powerful third-round knockout victory over Thomas Almeida back in March. Of his thirteen wins, ten were finishes. He’s no slouch, but a MMA veteran like Smolka isn’t the sort of man who shies from a contest. It’s unlikely that the 29-year old fighter would want a way out of a scheduled bout, particularly on such a high-profile card as UFC 264.
O’Malley conceded the implausibility of his position: “I don’t even know if that’s how you get staph. I don’t know dude, that’s a conspiracy theory, so maybe that’s what happened, maybe not… I don’t blame the dude.”
Sean O’Malley will look to increase his win streak to two with a victory over newcomer Kris Moutinho. O’Malley wants to aim for the bantamweight title, and in such a stacked division, only big performances and stunning victories will get him there. O’Malley certainly has the persona and the exciting style to get Dana White’s attention, but whether he has the ability to fight for the title will be decided in the Octagon.
Do you see O’Malley winning the fight on Saturday, or has “Suga” Sean been found out? Will he go on to challenge for the bantamweight title? Let us know what you think in the comments.
