Conor McGregor, fresh out of surgery on his broken leg, released a video in which he blasted his opponent, Dustin Poirier. McGregor, in typically brash fashion, declared the fight “illegitimate”.
In a video he posted to social media, Conor addressed his fans before turning his attention to Poirier: “What’s up fight fans. The ‘Notorious’ here. Just out of the surgery room.
McGregor blasts Poirier over “illegitimate win”
Everything went to plan. Everything went perfect. I am feeling tremendous. We’ve got six weeks on a crutch now and then we begin to build back.
You know, I want to thank all the fans all around the world for your messages of support. I hope you all enjoyed the show. I want to thank all the fans in attendance at the T-Mobile Arena.
21,800 fans in attendance, the place was absolutely electric. It was a hell of a first round. It would have been nice to get into that second round and then to see what’s what but it is what it is.
That is the nature of the business. It was a clean break of the tibia, and it was not meant to be.” In addressing Poirier, he stated his position on their trilogy:
“Dustin, you can celebrate the illegitimate win all you want. But you’ve done nothing in there. That second round would have shown all.
And you know onwards and upwards we go team. We dust ourselves off. We build ourselves back and we come back better than ever. Let’s go team!”
The third McGregor-Poirier fight may have started as expected, with both men immediately coming aggressively with an array of strikes, but the first surprise was quick to arrive. Conor, against the cage, attempted a guillotine submission on Poirier.
This seemed to tire the Irishman out, leaving him open to Poirier’s brutal ground-and-pound strategy. There were shades of the Khabib fight, with McGregor writhing on the canvas as Poirier threw merciless power shots at McGregor’s head.
Once the two were up, the fight’s second surprise came quickly. Conor took a step back following a kick, rolled his ankle, and snapped his tibia.
Once the horn went, a doctor quickly established that McGregor’s foot was pointing the wrong way, and the end was declared. TKO, doctor’s stoppage, in favor of Dustin Poirier.
Do you want to see a rematch, or is this rivalry all wrapped up? Do you see McGregor returning to the fight game once he’s healed and recovered? Let us know in the comments.
