Kenny Omega has had an odd year, he started in NJPW as the IWGP Heavyweight Champion, lost it in the main event of the Tokyo Dome, then seemed to fall off the face of the wrestling landscape until AEW got properly started, but he plans to finish strong. At the AAA Heroes Inmortales XIII event, Omega defeated Rey Fenix of The Lucha Brothers to become AAA Mega Champion holder, ending Fenixs reign at 420 Days. His first defense has just been announced as former CMLL talent Dragon Lee is slated to face him on December 1st.
Who Is Dragon Lee?
Dragon Lee has made his name in CMLL & NJPW as one of the worlds premiere luchadors, his feud with Hiromu Takahashi of NJPW being an highlight of many cards due to their breakneck pace. He recently left CMLL due to a contract dispute, putting his status in wrestling in question. It’s highly likely that he signs with NJPW around the start of the new year, but until then he’s been having some interesting matches, recently teaming with his brother and current ROH Champion Rush to face Rey Fenix & Pentagon Jr. in the CRASH promotion down in Mexico, and now being announced to be facing Kenny Omega for one of AAA’s top titles.

AAA is a lucha-libre promotion down in Mexico, who often play second fiddle to the bigger and more prestigious CMLL, but are able to pull in crowds of 18k for big shows like AAA Triplemania XXVII. They put on some fantastic shows, but have had a hard time breaking out across the border, so their plan was to put their top title on one of the most hyped up wrestlers in America today, Kenny Omega. This gets the belt mentioned on AEW Dynamite and brings some attention to AAA as a promotion. It also means we get to see Kenny face some opponents that has him turning back the clock to his days as a Jr. Heavyweight, something no one will complain about.
AAA has stated this event won’t be live streamed, which hopefully just means it won’t air on their Twitch Channel, but rather as a traditional PPV. A dream match like Omega vs. Dragon Lee would almost certainly translate into some buys from American & Mexican fans alike.
