Conor McGregor isn’t the type of guy to let a little thing like a broken leg keep him out of the ring, or out of the spotlight. According to Twitter, he’ll be returning to the boxing ring, albeit with a twist.
McGregor will compete in a wheelchair. And he’ll be fighting a McGregor impersonator. No, not Sean O’Malley or SBG Dublin teammate James Gallagher.
Conor McGregor to Face Conor McGregor Impersonator in Wheelchair Boxing Debut
According to an update posted on Twitter, McGregor responded to a poster advertising the fight for September 11:
“Guys, the September date is too early for me. I am still in recovery. My docs/physical therapy team out here advice me to stay. I reckon late October at earliest. But maybe November/December too. It is hard to say at this time a concrete date. But I’m in! Wait for me please!
“Give me time guys, I’m in! Just need to focus on this recovery for the next while first before I can commit to a date! Have some cool things planned for event tho! @IrishWheelchair#LamborghiniWheelchairs,”
His proposed opponent for the fight is Irish comedian Al Foran, most famous online for his impressions of Conor McGregor.
The Conor vs Conor fight was first revealed by McGregor’s head coach, John Kavanagh, who discussed it in an interview promoting SBG’s Wimp 2 Warrior program.
The original September date is postponed, however, with McGregor’s significant wealth it’s unlikely the charity would have to do without for long.
Conor, of course, will be out of serious competition for quite some time. McGregor suffered a gruesome leg break in the first round of his fight against Dustin Poirier. The bout was declared a doctor stoppage TKO, a win for Poirier, and Conor has made no secret about his desire to set the record straight. Poirier, on the other hand, is looking forward to challenging Charles Oliveira, and taking a run at the undisputed lightweight title.
McGregor is unlikely to appear in the Octagon again this year. A 2022 fight is more likely, if he recovers, and if he is able to seriously compete at the highest level. Broken legs can end athletic careers, and McGregor isn’t getting any younger. His MMA record since his historic knockout win over Eddie Alvarez is less than stellar, with a sole win to his name in four bouts. Perhaps now is the time for McGregor to bow out.
