Right now is a period of change with WWE, especially with the NXT brand. After releasing a ton of their talent over the past year, WWE is looking to bring in big name athletes and turn them into wrestling superstars; rather than hiring indy wrestlers that don’t fit what they want. One name that would make perfect sense for WWE to bring onboard is recent Olympic gold medal winner, Gable Steveson, who showed up at Summerslam.
Gable Steveson Was Honored At Summerslam Alongside Fellow Olympion Tamyra Mensah-Stock
In what was an odd segment in the middle of a stacked Summerslam card, WWE would honor two members of Team USA. At the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, both Gable Steveson & Tamyra Mensah-Stock were able to come away with gold medals. So at Summerslam, WWE had them come down to the ring in front of a massive crowd. This is something WWE would only do if they had some intentions in mind, especially given athletes with so much current name value.
Gable Steveson in particular seems interested in joining up with WWE, and is already calling himself ‘Modern Day Kurt Angle’. He’s met with Vince McMahon for atleast long enough to take a picture to post to Twitter. It was posted with the caption ‘The man I wanted to see.” With clear interest on both sides, it wouldn’t be shocking to find out talks are in progress or concluded.
A Major Name To Kick Off A New Era Of NXT
Coming back to NXT, WWE is making some sweeping changes to the show. A new set is coming with the next set of tapings, alongside a new theme song done by Wale & a colorful new logo. This is going to be a whole new era with a focus on a different type of talent – and Steveson might be that talent. Already having world class mat wrestling, Steveson could very well take the Kurt Angle route and be thrown into a stacked roster to see if he can float.
Kurt Angle started up with very little professional wrestling experience, but within his first year was one of the biggest stars in WWE. Steveson could do the same on the NXT brand, bringing some new eyes to a stale product, and perhaps staking a claim to the new best rookie year in WWE history.
