It’s been a bit of a twisty ride, but after weeks of speculation on when it ends, Adam Cole’s WWE contract is finally free. He’s officially a free agent, and arguably the hottest one on the market – given the rumors that Daniel Bryan has already signed with AEW. What could be the next step in the career of Adam Cole?
WWE Couldn’t Possibly Top His NXT Run On Main Roster
When it comes to WWE, they’ve been trying to get him to put pen to paper on a new deal. He met with Vince McMahon himself, and there were storylines starting to be put together for him on both RAW & Smackdown. While these talks were reported to have gone fairly well, Cole still has not agreed to any of their deals.
One issue with Cole in WWE is that he already had a great run there. His time in NXT was arguably the best we’ve ever seen, with him truly being dominant from start to finish, always a major star. Cole was able to go to WWE NXT, become a bigger name than he was before, and now truly feels like a big deal because of the matches he was able to have there.
WWE wouldn’t book Cole in the same way on RAW or Smackdown. His size would likely keep him at a midcard level with occasional main event shine, like the current role of Finn Balor. Add in WWE cutting contracts like mad, and it’s hard to imagine anyone wanting to stick around – when even names like Bray Wyatt would be cut without much thought.
AEW Have The Built In Storylines – Fits Adam Cole Best
When it comes to AEW, Adam Cole could have been there from the start had he not signed with WWE. He was longtime friends with The Young Bucks, and a member of The Elite branch of Bullet Club. In the early days of Being The Elite, he was a constant name, but that all changed when he was poisoned. While storylines from Being The Elite will often not bleed over onto AEW programming, this could be the exception.
Adam Cole could show up, address his past with The Elite & Kenny Omega, claiming they kicked him out of their group because he’d eclipse them as a star. Cole is one of the best talkers in the world, and could truly put on some incredible matches in the AEW style. Add in his girlfriend Britt Baker being the AEW World Women’s Champion, and it’s hard to see Cole not going to AEW.
Another option is ROH, who could really use a big returning star like Adam Cole. They’ve been mentioning him more frequently with The Kingdom, and after Samoa Joe, CM Punk and possibly Daniel Bryan slipped through their fingers – Cole could be their big get. However, this is doubtful given the spot of ROH as the fourth or fifth promotion in America.
