For watchers of NXT & 205 Live, Oney Lorcan has become an easy fan favorite. The man wrestles like he’s in the main event of Wrestlemania but with a 5 minute time limit. He is someone who truly gives his all in every single matchup, no matter if it’s on a house show or NXT Takeover.
Recently, he’s changed his name on Twitter back to his old handle of Biff Busick, and it’s approaching on 5 years since the brawling expert joined WWE, his contract could be winding down.
Oney In WWE
Oney has not really experienced any championship glory in WWE. He has challeged for titles such as the WWE NXT Cruiserweight Championship, NXT Tag Team Championships, and NXT North American Championship with no winning success.
His tag team with Danny Burch, The Brit-Am Brawlers, have become a cornerstone of the NXT tag team division, with their hard hitting style taking every team they face to their limits. Their matches with The Undisputed Era have stole every card they’ve been seen on. Their team was formed out of mutual respect after they faced off in a series of increasingly hard hitting singles matches before uniting to bring the pain to the rest of the roster.
A Mutual Split
Oney Lorcan hasn’t made any long winded statements on Twitter asking for his release, he could be just as simple as him not having a place in NXT going forward and wanting to test the waters of the independant curcuit once again. NXT has rasied his stock considerably, without him even needing championship glory along the way. His performances won him fans who frankly might have overlooked him otherwise.
Could Oney Be AEW Bound?
With AEW (All Elite Wrestling) becoming a growing presence in wrestling, it’s hard to not assume any talent who leaves WWE would go knock on their doors and see if they have a role for them. Oney isn’t exactly a star, but his hard hitting quick style makes him an exciting lower-card talent who AEW could benefit from. Matches with the likes of Darby Allin or The Young Bucks would be sights to behold for Lorcan, and makes AEW a very appealing option for his fans. He would also be a natural fit in NJPW with their Juniors Division, or the throwback style of NWA Power.
This is all speculation based on his Twitter account. It only has merit if his original NXT deal signed in 2015 was a 5 year deal, and him changing his name back to Biff Busick is him trying to build up some hype for him to explode back onto the indy wrestling world. If he leaves, I do hope he drags Danny Burch along for the ride, and we see him throwing his finger up in a fresh landscape sometime next year.
