WWE have major plans in mind for perhaps their biggest signing of 2021. In a year which saw them cut their roster in half, and refocus their efforts with WWE NXT to try and make more Wrestlemania Main Event level stars, they signed perhaps their future ace. Gable Steveson is just 21 years old, and has won an Olympic Gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Games in the Men’s Freestyle 125 kilograms category. He’s one of the best wrestlers in the world – and WWE is already seeing him in the main roster mix by May 2022.
WWE Wants To Hot Shot Gable Steveson Right Into The Mix
With Steveson currently focusing on college at the University of Minnesota, he is expected to report to WWE very soon. There is talk of him jumping past NXT and going right to the main roster as early as May 2022. If he is to go to NXT, it will not be a long stay. WWE seems to really be hoping that Steveson picks up their style of professional wrestling super quick, as fast as someone like Ronda Rousey or Kurt Angle has.
This would be a major play by WWE, and if it paid off it would establish Steveson as a megastar. There was also recent talk of him defeating Brock Lesnar at a future Wrestlemania – which could be their way of him capping off a history making rookie year. We have to expect WWE to strap a rocket to Steveson, and he’s truly set to soar.
An Attempt To Bring In Lapsed Fans?
The future of WWE in the eyes of fans is very uncertain. There are rumors of a looming sale to Disney, TV ratings are dipping lower and lower, and no talent outside of maybe Roman Reigns is safe from having their contract cut at a moment’s notice. Because of these aspects, fans are really starting to move over to watching AEW instead.
However, having a legit wrestling superstar like Gable Steveson on top might help WWE bring in some lapsed fans or even those from the world of MMA. He’s not a household name yet – but has all the credentials to be one in due time. We will have to see if he can move the needle for WWE, or will be a failed experiment as a top star.
