Since coming to AEW, CM Punk has not wrestled on their flagship program of Dynamite. He’s been on PPV, and wrestling frequently on AEW Rampage – and tonight finally makes his debut on Dynamite. This comes after Bobby Fish took some extra time to lay in a beating on Anthony Greene on Saturday Night Dynamite. Punk made the save before the challenge was set. Fish wants to prove that Punk isn’t worthy to call himself “The Best In The World”, but mainly just wanted to get the biggest singles match of his career and a chance to shine.
CM Punk Always Gets The Big Crowd Reception
Punk would hit the ring first to kick off this edition of AEW Dynamite, with Fish close behind. Big chance for Fish here, should he defeat CM Punk and break his perfect record. Both are veteran talents, but Fish didn’t have a long hiatus from the ring like Punk has. They’d start off with some strikes, but Fish missed a kick and was quickly taken down into a headlock takeover.
Fish would be able to slip out and drive Punk into the corner, getting some kicks to the leg of Punk before applying a sleeper hold. Punk would slip free and get a snapmare into an elbow drop before a sleeper hold on Fish before two quick scoop slams, getting just as much on the count.
A running knee strike in the corner would see Fish almost brought into the Go To Sleep, but was able to break free. He’d get the snapmare to set up that senton over the top rope, before getting a two count off a vertical suplex. Back into a sleeper hold, Fish was working at a pace he is very comfortable with, but Punk was able to get free, send Fish to the floor and nail that Tope Suicida!
Bobby Goes To Sleep With The Fishes
Back in the ring, Punk would look for the elbow drop, but Fish slipped outside. Fish was waiting and nailed a kick to the leg as Punk went to the apron, Punk landing hard on his shoulder. He’d struggle to his feet only to take a running back elbow, before Fish moved into a back suplex before an inverted Dragon Screw leg whip on the floor. Another attack on the knee would see a submission, but one that Punk could easily punch his way out of.
Fish would pull Punk outside, where a brawl would see Punk get some ground before a knee to the midsection took him down. We were getting into deep waters with this match as Fish attacked the knee of Punk once again, this time bending it around the ring rope. Punk was put up to the top rope, but punched Fish off. He’d balance on his good leg before coming down with an elbow drop, getting a two count.
They’d battle to their feet with strikes, but Fish kicked the leg out of Punk’s leg. Punk came back with a dropkick and a neckbreaker, before the rising knee and short arm clothesline in the corner. Go To Sleep was countered into the Dragon Screw, and Fish hit a sliding lariat. Punk got a double leg takedown into a pin, and was able to move this into a successful Go To Sleep for a lucky win.
A slow paced but hard hitting fight from two of the best technical wrestlers in AEW. Punk has been doing great in every match he’s had in AEW, and his Dynamite debut was no exception. As it went on, it only got better – and Punk is seemingly getting better as the ring rust goes away. Match Rating: 3.5/5 (*** 1/2)
