Jay Z has come out and defended Dave Chappelle following the criticism the comedian has received in response to his Netflix show entitled ‘The Closer.’
Jay Z Defends Comedian Dave Chappelle Following His Netflix Controversy
Dave, for his part, was accused of being transphobic on the grounds that his jokes were mocking members of the LGBTQ community.
Although his fans denied the claims, the employees of Netflix walked out in order to demand that the network remove his show. And yet, Jay Z who is a close friend of Dave wanted to tell the world just how brave Dave is for standing up for his beliefs.
In a statement, he said: “I think that Dave is super brave and super genius. If you spend time with him, he’s brilliant, and I think he pushed a lot of buttons.”
Jay Z is all too aware of making controversial statements. In 2008, he ended up getting into a feud with Oasis singer Noel Gallagher after the rapper was scheduled to headline the Glastonbury music festival.
Noel felt that his presence was not needed, given that the festival is known for recognising guitar music. In response, Noel had reportedly said: “I’m sorry, but Jay-Z? No chance.
“Glastonbury has a tradition of, kind of, guitar music, do you know what I mean… I’m not having hip hop at Glastonbury. No way, no, no. It’s wrong.”
Clearly, Jay Z did not take those comments well. He was outraged by what he perceived to be a sign of disrespect against his music.
In reply, he had apparently stated: “We don’t play guitars, Noel, but hip hop has put in its work like any other form of music.”
Much in the same way, Jay Z recognises that Dave is a divisive figure. But by being a comedian, he should be allowed to say what he truly thinks. Then it is up to each individual as to whether they want to watch his content.
After all, that is what freedom of speech is all about. He added: “I think that what happens with true art is it has to cause conversation, and you know sometimes it’s going to be abrasive…I think great art is divisive.”
