There are a few names that most people of a certain age, regardless if they are wrestling fans, will recognize. The Rock, Hulk Hogan, Stone Cold, John Cena, Ric Flair and others have all left their mark on pop culture, but the most bizarre of all is The Undertaker. Who would have thought making the 6’10 ginger into an undead zombie wizard would create a pop culture legend for the ages?
The Undertaker Still Has The Itch, But Can’t Go At The Level Fans Want
The Undertaker has had a career full of ups and downs, but he closed things out on a high note. His final match was the best of the cinematic era, a slasher movie inspired romp with AJ Styles in The Boneyard match. This will remain his final match as well, as he has the sense to understand that he can’t give the fans what they want anymore. While speaking with The Dallas Times about the announcement of Wrestlemania 38, he’d talk about why he resists the wrestling itch.
“I think it’s always in my head and in my heart, especially getting ready for WrestleMania here at AT&T Stadium it’s just like … man. But it’s just at a point where physically, I can’t perform at a level. I mean, I could go out and walk through something and I could get through a match. But I can’t give people what they expect at this point. When you see Undertaker, you pay money to see that guy wrestle. I can’t deliver physically on what people’s expectations are. The passion is obviously still there. I think that will always be there. It’s just the physical side of it. My time has come, my time has gone. This is the WWE and things happen, you never know. But I know that my time has passed and it’s time for these young guys to step up and take over and lead us to where we’re going.”
Something He Should Have Realized Sooner, But You Take The Bad With The Good
This is a tough pill to swallow for someone like The Undertaker, and for many of his fans as well. Honestly, considering how rough his last few years were, with embarrassing matches against Roman Reigns & Goldberg – it might have been better for him to realize this sooner. However, that means giving up matches like his Tornado Tag with Roman Reigns against Shane McMahon & Drew McIntyre & The Boneyard match.
The tail end of his career was not the best, but he still got to go out like a legend. His WWE career came to an end with an awkward ceremony in the WWE Thunderdome, so they might be keen on him entering the Hall of Fame in 2022, with Wrestlemania being in his home state. It would give a second chance at a send off, and you know he’ll hang around on a legends deal for years to come.
