Conor McGregor declared via Twitter that he doesn’t want to fight just anybody when he returns to the UFC. His first port of call will be the top of the lightweight division, regardless of who holds the belt. He initially replied to an article speculating on what his next move will be.
“Hi lads, here it goes… clicks and the like. Your boss and what not. The Mac. Santy Claus. I’m facing whoever the f*ck has that LW title next. Deal with it.
McGregor Declares that He Will Challenge for Lightweight Belt Upon UFC Return
Take off your goggles and mark the trilogy “unfinished”. Deal with that too. The rest mentioned, after this. Deal. With. It.”
It’s not clear exactly what Conor McGregor expects the rest of the world to be dealing with, but he sure is insistent that they do so. McGregor once held both the UFC lightweight and featherweight titles, but was stripped of both due to inactivity.
Since his return to the UFC following his pro boxing debut against Floyd Mayweather, McGregor hasn’t won a single fight at lightweight, losing to Khabib Nurmagomedov once and Dustin Poirier twice.
In his most recent fight, a bout against Dustin Poirier in July, McGregor sustained a broken leg which will keep him out of the Octagon until 2022.
However, the Irishman claims that he will have “no issue” bouncing back, sharing a photo of himself training with a strapped leg, supposedly thanks to stress fractures in the leg.
“I will no have issue returning from this injury. Not an iota of issue. I’ve already prepared for a fight under these exact conditions. Here is a snap from my last camp. At McGregorFast HQ with team. Shin pad taped on to the left leg due to stress fractures/trauma.
Me and all you pull out merchants are not the same! You are b*tch made and I’m now steel. This game has just begun. Know that all my enemies are of similar age and experience, and for this reason, I hereby declare this war forever!”
If Conor McGregor wants to fight for the title again, he’ll need to string together some impressive wins. Following his time at the top, the lightweight division underwent a serious overhaul, with some of the most impressive fighters in the sport calling 155 pounds home.
In addition to Dustin Poirier, there’s Justin Gaethje, Michael Chandler, reigning champion Charles Oliveira, and even newcomer and Khabib’s heir apparent Islam Makhachev. Conor McGregor might be a big name, but he may not get the straight shot at the title he believes he deserves.
