The WWE and Vince McMahon is always thinking about the next being thing as we’ve seen over the years when he tried to replace Hulk Hogan with Tommy McGee and the Ultimate Warrior.
It’s important for any business to be ready to infuse fresh young talent into their roster but this is especially true in sports where there’s a limit to how long someone can perform.
Kurt Angle is one of the greatest of all time and he helped lift the WWE and TNA to new heights during his time with the companies, but the ending to his career could’ve been far different than we got to see is Vince had had his way.
The right way
Angle recently appeared on Talk is Jericho where he talked about his decision to retire after WrestleMania 35 instead of going one more year.
It appears Vince had plans to give him a big sendoff, but first he wanted Angle to put others over for one more year.
Special thanks to wrestlingheadlines.com for the following transcript.
“Well Vince [McMahon] said, ‘Well Kurt, you can do that next year.’ I was like, ‘Vince, I’m retiring this year.’ He said, ‘Well if you wait another year, I could do that for you.’ I said, ‘No, no, I’m gonna do it this year’ because there was no way in hell I was gonna wrestle another year especially in WWE because all they were gonna do was job me out for the whole year so, I knew — I could see the writing on the wall and I didn’t know if I wanted to be a part of that.”
It’s a trend
We’re glad Angle went out like he did because while Vince believes in moments, it’d be hard to forget an entire year of Angle being a glorified jobber before hanging up his wrestling boots.
Recently, it was reported that Vince told Shinsuke Nakamura that his job is to put over younger talent, meaning Nakamura won’t ever get a deserved run as world champion, so there’s evidence it’s a regular thing.
But Angle’s different in that he entered the company like a rocket and became a top performer pretty quickly, and even though he was nearing the end of his career, the thought of him going out as a jobber.
Do you think Angle made the right decision or should he have stuck around to job out to younger talent? Let us know in the comments below.
